On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! Coming this Summer!!

Public libraries are gearing up to offer summer reading programs for students of all ages. Libraries will offer events, crafts, and other fun activities to promote the enjoyment of reading a good book.  School is letting out for summer breaks so parents and children may want to stop by their local library for information about how to keep their children engaged in reading and learning.

At Montello Public Library and the other county libraries (Endeavor, Neshkoro, Oxford, Packwaukee, Westfield) the summer reading program theme for children is “On your mark, get set, Read!”.  The program at Montello Public Library runs from June 5, 2016 through July 16 and is available for children of all ages. During the same six week period, we will also host programs for our teens, with the theme “Get in the game – Read!” and for adult patrons as well. The theme of “Exercise your Mind. Read!” is the adult theme for this summer.  Prizes are awarded in all programs at the end of the program.

Studies show that students who do not read during the summer can experience “summer set-back” or “summer slide”, losing ground in learning and returning to school less ready for the next year than when they began their summer break.  At Montello Public Library, our goal is to keep kids reading and learning throughout the summer, even a little each day.  Set goals to read every week this summer, and attend library events and earn prizes as incentives!

So take a book along to the park, an audio book along on a long car trip, or even break out the comic books. In fact, students and people of all ages can have fun reading and earning prizes from their local public library.

Stay tuned for the full summer library program schedule of events- Join us Saturday, June 4, at 9am for the first stop on the Summer Saunter tour, with Kathleen McGwin and her doggies, Betty, Beulah and Blanche. Learn about John Muir and make your very own saunter stick to be used at events throughout the summer all around our great county.  Also, our first scheduled performer will be on Thursday June 9 at 11 a.m. at the community room at the Montello Municipal building.  Come see Nickey Fynn, a vaudeville style magician for a spectacular show and also a balloon sculpture event the same day!

Signups for the reading challenges begin June 3rd and may be done in person or on our website at www.montellolibrary.org.
